Fireworks Safety
The 4th of July is just around the corner; Happy Birthday America!!! There are thousands of reported firework-related injuries and fires every year. The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to leave them to the professionals.
Fireworks are used to mark special events and holidays.
Some fun facts:
- More than 19,500 reported fires are started by fireworks
- Burns account for 44% of injuries treated in the ER that are seen around the 4th of July
- Hands, fingers, toes, and eyes are at the highest risk of injury
- Children ages 10-14 have the highest rate of firework injuries
- Sparklers account for ¼ of ER firework injuries
Safety Tips
- Use only legal fireworks; know your local laws
- Keep water close
- Keep your distance
- Fireworks should only be used outdoors
- Never let children play with or light fireworks
- Never point fireworks at yourself or others
- Soak them in water after use before throwing them in the trash
- Never try to relight a dud
Some ideas to celebrate without using fireworks
- Use glow sticks,
- Be loud and proud, use a different safer noisemaker
- Do a movie night outdoors
- Find silly string…have silly string battles
- Have crafts…
- Don’t forget the cake!
